Press Release on 2017 World Meningitis Day

Tuesday, 25 April 2017 12:56

Today, 24th of April is World Meningitis Day. This year’s event coincides with a time when massive intervention towards stemming the epidemic of meningitis outbreak is ongoing in Nigeria.

This year, the theme “TRUST YOUR INSTINCT”, as adopted by the global body, is very apt for the Nigerian situation.

Time has come for the country to be proactive rather than reactive to situations and conditions that are predictable by science but still causing preventable deaths and disaster in our dear country. The ranking of Nigeria as Number 152 among 188 countries in Human Development Index by UNDP is largely due to occurrences of this nature. National institutions should be strengthened, not only to respond, but to be sufficiently proactive in preventing all manner of disaster that could embarrass the Nigeria among the committee of nations.

Caritas Nigeria as an organization, in marking this year World Meningitis Day, has earmarked sensitization and intervention programs within our operational catchment areas. These programs include immunization with polyvalent meningitis vaccine, community awareness programs, road shows, radio talk shows among others. National development cannot be left to the Government alone. Little drops of water, the saying goes, make an ocean. It is on this basis that we believe that our contributions, if emulated by others, will be the critical vehicle that will move us all to our desired destination of a safe and healthy Nigeria.

Today is World Meningitis Day, the call is for us all to rise and ‘trust our instinct’ and say never again will there be epidemic of meningitis in Nigeria that we will not be prepared for.

Thank you and have a fruitful day.
