Emergency Response Profile - 2017

Caritas Nigeria collaborated with Catholic Relief Services in implementing Lifesaving WASH intervention in the wake of the 2012 floods in Nigeria.

In view of the Boko Haram insurgence in the North Eastern region of Nigeria, several interventions have been implemented to address the needs of the internally displaced persons through various Emergency Appeals since 2014 till date.

In its CI-EA 2015 intervention, Caritas Nigeria planned to reach 11,900 beneficiaries directly. At the end of the intervention it reached 19,000 beneficiaries directly and 260,000 beneficiaries indirectly. Funds were also secured from UNICEF with the signing of two Project Cooperative Agreements (PCAs) to implement WASH intervention for improved access of 5,283 IDP households and their host communities to safe water, sanitation and personal hygiene. In addition Caritas equally secured another grant from the Australian High Commission to address food and WaSH needs of internally displaced persons in Wassa district of Abuja, Federal Capital Territory where we 200 households were supported to address their agricultural livelihood through farm input voucher fair. The project is still sustaining the IDPs till date.

In addition, Caritas Nigeria, with support from CAFOD hopes to implement a WaSH project funded by Czech government. The current CI Emergency Appeal plans to reach 9000 beneficiaries in communities in Hawul and Askira Uba LGAs, Borno State in the areas of Nutrition, Health, Livelihoods, and WaSH. This is in addition to the just signed agreement with FAO to distribute agricultural input kits to 12,000 Households in Michika, Mubi North, Mubi South (Adamawa State), Hawul and Askira Uba LGAs (Borno State).
